Inspired by the romantic early 20th-century costumes of Sergei Diaghilev's
Ballets Russes, David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed a heavily-embroidered
gown for their 1986 collection. Diana bought the gown at a charity auction, and
wore it to several events between 1986 and 1989. The white satin and silk
organza gown is intricately embroidered in gold and faux pearls, and has a
corset-style bodice with pointed peplum. The gown included removable cap
sleeves and a headband. This replica, like the original, is constructed from white
satin and white silk organza, and is faithfully and painstakingly duplicated.
Hundreds of tiny gold and pearlescent seed beads and gold fabrics were hand
sewn and hand appliqued to duplicate the intricate embroidery of the original
gown. Diana accessorized the gown differently each time she was photographed
wearing the ensemble: at times with the headband, cap sleeves, pearl necklace,
and white satin opera length gloves; other times she replaced the headband with
the Spencer tiara or wore no headdress; and at times she wore the gown alone.
Diana's various looks are made possible with the replication of her headband,
gloves, white satin pumps, and functional clutch bag; those looks are
represented in the photographs of the ensemble.
Diana was the epitome of the fairy-tale princess in her glittering ensemble, and
that look is now available for the 16" vinyl doll. The doll's ensemble consists of
the gown, removable sleeves, headband, gloves, purse, necklace, and shoes.
(The tiara and earrings are not included.) $800, including nonrefundable $200
deposit.
